Somerset Schools Operating Referendum
What's being asked:
$1.4 million per year for 5 years (2026–2031). This is a temporary increase. It automatically ends in 2031.
What is a "non-recurring" referendum?
A temporary request. Unlike a permanent tax increase, this one has a built-in expiration date. If the district needs more after 2031, voters would have to approve it again.
Where the money goes:
Great staff — recruiting and keeping excellent teachers
Building upkeep — long-term maintenance
Safety — keeping schools secure and kids safe
Why is this needed:
Lagging State Aid- Not keeping pace with inflation
Budget deficit- $1.4 million in 5 years
Declining Enrollment- Families are having fewer kids
Bottom line: A five-year, self-expiring investment in staff, facilities, and safety, not a permanent tax hike.
