Early Literacy Remediation Plan

Early Literacy Vision and Mission: We believe that instructional excellence encompasses evidence-based instructional strategies to build literacy skills in all students, emphasizing the science of early literacy instruction through a lens of diversity and inclusivity.

Somerset strives for excellence in all students' academic achievement. Teacher knowledge is at the forefront of creating literate individuals, enhancing student success at school, as well as in society. Literacy encompasses reading (phoneme awareness, phonics, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and fluency), writing, speaking, and listening. Learning experiences become richer when literacy instruction in all content areas is rooted in scientifically and evidence-based practices.

At Somerset, we value and commit to:

  • Using systemic, explicit instruction to establish a strong literacy foundation

  • Modeling literacy strategies to promote independent reading and writing

  • Allowing adequate time for reading, writing, speaking, and listening experiences in all content areas

  • Fostering oral language development through meaningful discussions, encouraging critical thinking

  • Using instructional and assessment tools that promote differentiated instruction and honor diversity

  • Ensuring additional support to students

  • Encouraging attending school regularly to build literacy and other academic skills

  • Nurturing literacy through a collaboration between school and home
