Reading and Language Arts Skills-
We are currently in the process of implementing "The Daily Five" into our Reading/Language Arts Block. The Daily Five consists of these core ideas on a daily basis to increase student acheivement: read to self, read to someone, writing, listening to reading, and word work. The goal is to have the students build stamina and gain independence in these five areas while the teacher is then able to work with students in small groups depending on their goals/needs.
Trimester One
-
phonics skills such as long, short vowels, and vowel pairs

sentence writing (using capitals and puncuation)

work on our handwriting

review spelling words from first grade

formulate our ideas into sentences

look for story elements-characters, setting, problem and solution

work on our reading fluency, vocabulary and expression

introduce and create poetry
Trimester Two
-
continue working on reading for comprehension
-
read fluently and practice using expression
-
use a web to formulate ideas for writing
-
begin paragraph writing- how to, narratives, nonfiction, persuasive, etc.

use spelling words correctly in daily writing
-
look for the author's purpose
