SPEECH, LANGUAGE AND FLUENCY ACTIVITIES
ARTICULATION ACTIVITIES:
1. I’m thinking of…Use words that have your child’s special sounds.
2. Read stories together…Pick out words with targets sounds and repeat them.
3. Make a sound book or sound cards. Cut out magazine pic or draw them.
4. Memory… make doubles of practice words/pics to play.
5. Repeat your child’s misarticulated words using the correct production. Choose one specific sound. Targeting multiple sounds can get confusing. Use lots of positive praise and have fun together!
LANGUAGE ACTIVITIES:
1. Read books together and talk about them…ask who, what, where, when, why ?’s.
2. Incorporate word games using categories, opposites, synonyms, definitions.
3. Talk about similarities/differences while comparing items.
4. Label items, describe items, talk about what they do!
5. Talk about the steps in which you do things (1st, next, last).
6. Use and “act out” concepts words (on/off, in/out, front/back etc.)
FLUENCY SUGGESTIONS:
1. Choose activities that are “hands on” or do not require speaking. This takes the STRESS off of speech.
2. The adult can be the FOLLOWER and the child is the verbal LEADER.
3. The adult models slow, simple speech – in turn your child will most likely imitate what he hears. Do not say “SLOW DOWN”.
4. Reduce the excitement – have some “down time”. Try to allow for some individual time with your child. Reduce pressure and performance tasks.
