As in all aspects of our lives we face challenges. If you have an issue, challenge or problem regarding your child's education, IEP team members or decisions of the IEP team please feel free to explore these options:
- Call the Somerset Special Education Department at 715.247.4848 ext 571 and express your concerns.
- Talk to the people you trust at the district about the issue.
- Ask someone for advice.
- Write a letter, call or e-mail the school.
- Ask for another IEP team meeting.
- Use "I" statements: I don't understand...., can you help me?
- Make positive suggestions: "Would you be willing to try...?"
- Contact Kym Dunleap at 651-248-4607 kdunleap@somerset.k12.wi.us
If you are still having difficulties, you can ask for mediation. Trained mediators can help you and the school district create a plan of action in order to solve the problem. The school must agree to comply with that plan and in turn you must also comply. Mediation is free. Mediation is confidential. Any agreement made at mediation must be in writing.
Talking the problem through, brainstorming various solutions, reviewing IEP's or mediation can usually solve most challenges. If you feel the challenge is not being addressed appropriately a complaint may be filed with The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction at 1.800.441.4563 or at www.dpi.wi.gov . However, if you're not satisfied with the outcome of a complaint you can request a due process hearing. This is a formal hearing before a judge. The judge will hear the complaint and will decide the outcome. The DPI will have information about mediation, filing complaints and due process hearings.
